Statement from Tourism Critic Geraldine Van Bibber on the Little Gold/Poker Creek Border

“I am happy to hear the announcement from the federal government that the Little Gold-Poker Creek border crossing between Canada and the U.S. on the Top of the World Highway west of Dawson City will be returning to pre-pandemic opening and closing dates.

“Tourism operators in the Klondike have informed me that it has affected their operations since the border was operating on a shorter season. I have been pushing the territorial government since 2022 through questions and motions in the Legislative Assembly to work with the federal government and officials in Alaska to have the crossing open as usual in mid-May, and close in mid-September.

“I also wrote to the federal Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs on April 16, 2024, urging him to consider supporting a return to pre-pandemic dates and daily hours at this border crossing.

“With such a short tourism season, every day and week counts for tourism operators.

“Thank you to the Canada Border Services Agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the State of Alaska, and the federal and territorial governments for making this happen.

“I welcome all visitors using North America’s most northern international border crossing and wish tourism operators in the Klondike a successful summer.”
